CONTRIBUTION OF JAPAN IN THE SUPPRESSION OF BOXER REBELLION
A reformative rebellion known as Boxer revolt also broke out in China. The young emperor led this movement with the support of militant party to save the country from western influence and supremacy. This militant party was also known as Boxer. They made an invasion on the foreigners residing in the ambassy of Peking and killed several missionaries. As result a joint army of the concerned countries was organized. Japan helped to save the lives of foreigners in Peking so he got the right of speaking in the matter of China in an International assembly.
ANGLO-JAPANESE TREATY
After Sino-Japanese war two opinions were going on among the politicians of China, one wanted to conclude a treaty with Russia and consolidate the position of the country while the other desired an alliance with England for the good of their country. Both Russia and Britain were imperialist countries and wanted to extend their influence in Balkan Peninsula. Similarly England like Japan also had a desire to conclude a pact with some powerful country of Asia, so that nobody could harm her eastern trade and control. Hence a treaty was signed between England and Japan in 1902 A.D. which is popularly known as Anglo-Japanese treaty. It strengthened the position of both the countries to a great extent. Both responded to the rights of each other. After signing of this treaty Japan began to be counted among the countries equal to the status of a European country.
RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR
Taking advantage of Boxer revolt, Russia sent her armies in Manchuria for the safety of her citizens and their property. She did not remove her army from Manchuria even after the suppression of revolt. He tried to implement the policy of territorial integrality and open door in Manchuria like other parts of China. In fact Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905 A.D.) was the result of Anglo-Japanese treaty. Russia wanted to enhance her influence in Manchuria but other imperialist countries opposed to it. Russia felt greatest danger from Japan and Britain. On account of Anglo-Japanese treaties of 1902 A.D., Russia made slight change in her Manchurian policy. Though she promised to call back her army from Manchuria but did not act accordingly. Russia also demanded permission of China in establishing her economic supremacy over Manchuria.
Russia also tried to establish her influence on Korea. It horrified Japan because he could never think of the influence of Russia on Korea. Japan stressed Russia to recognize the interests of Japan in Korea. In return Japan accepted the interests of Russia in Manchuria but Russia did not agree to this proposal so the relations between the two countries were strained. But suddenly Japan declared war in 1904 against Russia and gained the preliminary advantage.
Russo-Japanese war was fought for one year on foreign land with foreign money. The land was of China and money of America, England, Russia and France. The war ended with the intervention of President of America and the treaty of Port Arthur was concluded on September 5, 1905 A.D. This was the second great military success of Japan. Japan got more advantages than she expected at the time of beginning of this war. It was a matter of pleasure for Japan that his enemy Russia had been defeated. After this war Japan began to be counted among the powerful countries of the world and slogan that Asia is for the Asians’ emerged. It also displayed the hollowness of Russia militarism before the world.
