1. Chronological Division of History of Tourism

Introduction:

Tourism has developed gradually over many centuries. In ancient times, people travelled mainly for trade, religion, education and exploration. As transportation, communication and technology improved, travelling became easier, faster and more comfortable. The history of tourism can therefore be divided into different periods to understand its development from ancient travel to modern and contemporary tourism.

Ancient Period:

The Ancient Period marks the beginning of organised travel. People travelled for trade, religious purposes, education, exploration and recreation. The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were important travellers. The Romans developed roads and accommodation facilities, which encouraged travel within their empire.

Medieval Period:

During the Medieval Period, travel was mainly related to religious pilgrimages, trade and exploration. Pilgrims travelled to important religious places, while merchants travelled to different regions to exchange goods. However, travelling was difficult because of poor roads, limited transportation and safety problems.

Renaissance Period:

During the Renaissance, there was greater interest in education, art, culture and knowledge. Wealthy people began travelling to different countries to learn about their history, culture and traditions. Travel became an important part of education and personal development.

Grand Tour Period:

The Grand Tour became popular during the 17th and 18th centuries. Young and wealthy Europeans travelled to countries such as France, Italy and Switzerland to gain knowledge and cultural experience. It was considered an important part of their education and helped develop cultural tourism.

Industrial Revolution:

The Industrial Revolution brought major changes to tourism. The development of railways, steamships and improved roads made travel faster, safer and more affordable. Thomas Cook introduced organised tours and helped make travel available to more people. This period is considered an important stage in the development of modern tourism.

Modern Tourism:

During the modern period, hotels, travel agencies, railways, automobiles and airlines developed rapidly. People started travelling more for holidays, recreation, business and education. Tourism gradually became an important economic activity and created many employment opportunities.

Mass Tourism:

After World War II, tourism expanded rapidly. Rising incomes, paid holidays, improved transportation and the growth of air travel allowed large numbers of people to travel. This period is known as mass tourism, because tourism became accessible to ordinary people rather than only wealthy travellers.

Contemporary Tourism:

Contemporary tourism is the present stage of tourism development. Internet technology, smartphones, online booking, digital payments and social media have made travel easier and more convenient. People now travel for leisure, business, adventure, education, culture and many other purposes. Sustainable and responsible tourism have also become increasingly important.

Conclusion:

The history of tourism shows how travel has changed from simple journeys for trade and religion to a global tourism industry. Developments in transportation, technology, communication and people’s standard of living have played a major role in this growth. Today, tourism connects people and cultures across the world and contributes significantly to economic, social and cultural development.
